| Tibetan Refugees Under China's Shadow
Nepal has imposed increasing restrictions on Tibetans living in the country as a result of strong pressure from China. A new report, "Under China's Shadow," shows that Tibetan refugee communities in Nepal are now facing a de facto ban on political protests, sharp restrictions on public activities promoting Tibetan culture and religion, and routine abuses by Nepali security forces. Nepal is home to a sizeable Tibetan community and has long played a crucial role as a haven and gateway for Tibetans fleeing repression in China. But as Nepal succumbs to pressure from China, Tibetans confronted by Nepali security forces experience excessive use of force, arbitrary detention, and ill-treatment in detention. They also face threats and intimidation and intrusive surveillance. | Malaysia Should End Police Abuses
Malaysia's police are not accountable to anyone but themselves, and ordinary people across the country too often pay the price with broken bodies and tragically shortened lives. The Malaysian government needs to put in place effective oversight of the police to end the wrongful deaths, preventable abuse in custody, and excessive use of force on the streets. | | Lebanon's Domestic Violence Law is Good, but Incomplete
Lebanon's law on domestic violence finally recognizes that women subjected to abuse by husbands and families need protection and legal recourse. But the law has serious flaws and the parliament should consider amendments to fully protect women from domestic violence. | | The United States Should Ban Landmines, Not Just Clear Them
It is nonsensical that the US has spent billions of dollars to clean up the mess caused by landmines, but insists on the right to use them again in the future. Throwing money at the problem is not enough. A permanent solution is needed and the Mine Ban Treaty provides it. | | LANDMINES | | | | | Has your country signed the treaty banning landmines?
