Tibetan Refugees Under China's Shadow

Nepal has imposed increasing restrictions on Tibetans living in the country as a result of strong pressure from China.

A new report, "Under China's Shadow," shows that Tibetan refugee communities in Nepal are now facing a de facto ban on political protests, sharp restrictions on public activities promoting Tibetan culture and religion, and routine abuses by Nepali security forces.

Nepal is home to a sizeable Tibetan community and has long played a crucial role as a haven and gateway for Tibetans fleeing repression in China.

But as Nepal succumbs to pressure from China, Tibetans confronted by Nepali security forces experience excessive use of force, arbitrary detention, and ill-treatment in detention. They also face threats and intimidation and intrusive surveillance.

USA The United States Should Ban Landmines, Not Just Clear Them

It is nonsensical that the US has spent billions of dollars to clean up the mess caused by landmines, but insists on the right to use them again in the future. Throwing money at the problem is not enough. A permanent solution is needed and the Mine Ban Treaty provides it.
