US Sends Central American Migrants Back to Danger

In recent years, US officials have apprehended growing numbers of Central Americans crossing the US-Mexico border without authorization. Migrants are fleeing for many reasons, among them rising rates of violence fueled by gangs and drug violence in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

The US government's fast-track screening of migrants is ignoring the very real fears of the people arriving at the border. In its frenzy to stem the tide of migrants from Central America, the US is sending asylum seekers back to the threat of murder, rape, and other violence.

ASIA Bangladesh Shouldn't Lower Marriage Age

Recent media reports in Bangladesh indicate the prime minister's cabinet is considering a revision to the law to make 16 the minimum age of marriage for girls. The minimum age for men would be 18. The proposed revisions would reverse stated government aims to reduce child marriage among girls.

EUROPE AND CENTRAL ASIA France's Counterterrorism Bill Threatens Rights

A counterterrorism bill before the French parliament would provide overly broad and vague powers that would breach rights to free movement and expression. The bill, proposed by the French government in July under an accelerated procedure, is now before the senate.
